Day One
Morning: Using Medicine Hat as base camp means you can be up at the crack of dawn ready for exploration. Head downtown to one of Medicine Hat’s coffee shops like Station Coffee House, pick up a fresh cup of Joe and a fresh roll, then drive an hour southeast to Cypress Hills Provincial Park. Visit Elkwater to walk the lovely boardwalk around the lake or, drop a fishing line or frolic in the water. Stop in at the Camp Cookhouse & General Store to check out the really wacky store and pick up a great lunch before heading to the summit. Okay, not really a summit but the top of the park is the highest point between the Rockies and Labrador.
Late Afternoon: Drive an hour west to Red Rock Coulee to explore a landscape like no other. Big beautiful concretions spill like lost marbles through the ravens and coulees. Learn how these unique geological features are formed then, plant yourself on one to watch the sun start to set far to the west. It’s only 40 minutes back to Medicine Hat.
