Whether you're enjoying a craft beer on a heated patio, climbing at a local gym, or trying your hand at a virtual sport, Port Alberni offers a surprising range of indoor experiences to brighten any rainy day.
Five rainy day adventures in Port Alberni
Nestled in the heart of Vancouver Island, Port Alberni sits at the head of the Alberni Inlet—a deep, fjord-like arm of the Pacific Ocean that stretches between towering, forested ridges.
Tamiko Corlazzoli, the food and beverage manager at Rimrock Casino, has lived in Port Alberni her whole life. The avid hiker says she copes with the darker winter months by hiking up above the clouds.
The forest air is thick with the scent of pine, and the landscape feels alive with the stories of generations who've called this place home. It's easy to see why Corlazolli enjoys year-round hiking here (and you can find some hiking tips here).
But for those who may not have the time or energy to hike a mountain, Corlazzoli suggests checking out the Rimrock Casino's multi-sport simulator.
1. The Rimrock Casino's multi-sport simulator
With virtual games of soccer, golf, hockey, football and lacrosse, Corlazzoli says, "You can experience the outdoors indoors."
The multi-sport simulator is the first of its kind in Port Alberni. Tucked away in a private room in the casino, it can host groups of up to 15 people.
“If it’s a rainy or snowy day and you feel like you want to get active, [the simulator] is a great workout,” Corlazzoli adds.
2. Bomber Boulders Climbing Centre
After learning to rock climb in gyms across British Columbia, Kayla Rentz became hooked. For Rentz, “The magic of climbing is the community behind it."
To bring that magic to Port Alberni, Rentz moved back to her hometown with her partner, Deon Towle. Together, they opened Bombers Boulders Climbing Centre, Port Alberni's first rock climbing facility.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced climber, Rentz says Bombers Boulders is a place where people can come together.
"The most integral part of our gym is the community behind it," she says. "I wanted it to be a place where people could meet friends to get outside."
Dedicated to keeping their prices affordable, you can purchase a day pass for $15. Climbing shoes and a chalk bag can be rented for an additional $5.
3. Alberni Brewing Company
Kianna Lorenzo is the manager of Alberni Brewing Company, a craft brewery in Port Alberni. A born and raised local, she's never lived anywhere else and doesn't care to.
"I love it here," she says. "It's a quiet town that has everything you need."
And on that list, she says, is craft breweries.
Alberni Brewing Company stands out with its impressive selection of 16 taps, all serving hand-crafted beers made on-site by owner and head brewer Jason Welsh and his son.
Every brew is carefully crafted in-house, showcasing their commitment to quality and local production.
