Snowshoeing was always something I associated with quiet, backcountry trails far from the bustle of popular resorts. I had heard about the snowshoe trails at Cypress Mountain from friends who swore by their beauty and accessibility. But every winter, other plans got in the way.

Then, recently, my best friend and I decided to finally give it a try. We packed up the car, bundled up in our warmest winter gear, and drove up the winding road to Cypress Mountain, the skyline of Vancouver fading below us as the snow-covered peaks came into view. What we experienced that day transformed the way I think about winter adventure.

Snowshoeing isn’t just a walk in the snow—it’s a chance to leave behind the city’s hustle, unwind from the stress of daily routines, and find a peaceful space to connect with friends, family, and nature.

Snowshoeing just steps from the city

Cypress Mountain is known as one of the best snowshoeing destinations in the Lower Mainland, and for good reason. Located just a 30-minute drive from downtown Vancouver, it offers a range of trails suitable for all levels, from beginner-friendly loops to more challenging treks.

Add to that the stunning vistas of Howe Sound, towering trees draped in snow, and the convenience of a full-service mountain lodge—it’s easy to see why Cypress is a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

The Nordic Area at Cypress Mountain makes snowshoeing incredibly accessible. The rental and ticket office are conveniently located together, streamlining the process for all the eager winter enthusiasts. Tickets can be pre-purchased online and picked up easily at a kiosk on-site, ensuring a fast and hassle-free start to your adventure.

After picking up our rentals, we strapped on our snowshoes and set out to conquer our first trail. The crisp mountain air and fresh snow beneath our feet were invigorating.

Pro Tip: The beginning of the snowshoe trails is connected to the nordic skiing trails, so be mindful of your surroundings and avoid accidentally heading down the wrong path!

When you go

Check the weather  Conditions can change quickly in the mountains, so always check the forecast before heading out.

Dress in layers  Snowshoeing is an active sport, and you’ll warm up quickly. Wear moisture-wicking base layers, a waterproof shell, and pack an extra layer just in case.

Bring the essentials  Don’t forget water, snacks, and a small first-aid kit. Trekking poles can also be helpful for balance on steeper sections.

Arrive early  Cypress is a popular destination, especially on weekends. Arriving early ensures you get a parking spot and a head start on the trails.

Rent or bring your own gear  If you don’t own snowshoes, Cypress Mountain’s Nordic Area offers rentals and trail passes.
