So welcome to this new-for-2023, "number one” location (“ we are one” being the definition of Tsawaak in Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation language): Tsawaak RV Resort & Campground, perched on the coast at MacKenzie Beach, minutes from Tofino, on Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation homelands.

How’s this itinerary, when you consider Tofino’s newest collection of RV campsites and cabins for rent:

  1. Grab a SUP rental from Tofino Paddle Surf and discover Mackenzie Beach from the water (see the banner image above, for a teaser)
  2. Score an oceanside rejuvenation session with Tuff City Saunas
  3. Hit Lil Ronnie’s BBQ for après and feast on the best BBQ on the West Coast (I make that claim from experience) – on its huge patio with live music most summer nights.

In less than a five-minute walking loop, you can put this Tsawaak itinerary to use and you’ve just experienced some of Tofino’s highest ranked spots.

Tuff City Saunas, one of Tofino's top experiences, is just a couple minutes' walk from Tsawaak RV Resort & Campground.

For those fortunate enough to be here in March with the launch of Tla-o-qui-aht’s newest tourism experience, naa’uu (returning in fall 2023), you’ll already know the cultural force that is building.

New Tsawaak RV Resort & Campground built on Indigenous design principles

Now only months later, they are extending another invitation with the launch of Tsawaak RV Resort & Campground, steps away from Mackenzie Beach, minutes from Tofino but in a whole other orbit for its celestial connections.

Prior to contact, Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation lived on the lunar cycle. The moon charted where their attention should lie through a calendar year of 13 months, pairing with the 13 lunar cycles through the year.

And through Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation's design here at this Nation owned operation, you will find 13 locally crafted Tsawaak cabins.

If you had a direct shot, you could throw a frisbee to the beach from the front of your cabin. However, given you are immersed in the lush landscape that is signature to Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, the old growth forest here makes that impossible.

This land was fought for to be kept as an ancient garden. Tla-o-qui- aht have a true west coast cabin immersion experience awaiting you, opening July 2023.

Next to the collection of cabins, Tsawaak RV Resort's location is what makes the difference and places it as a “must do” RV destination.

Tsawaak RV Resort's brand new RV sites come fully equipped with power, water and great access to all your Tofino experiences.

Best part for RV’rs? Access is before town: you drive into Tsawaak, pull into your stall or site, enjoy the sea breeze while you set up shop and two minutes later you can be out for a Mackenzie Beach walk, at the spot known locally as Tin Wis.

Tin Wis, in Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation dialect, means "calm waters."

Easy access sites mean site set up is a breeze.

“It’s quieter around here than other places in Tofino and the RV resort has a great feel as you drive in,” Bryce Dabb, a recent visitor, describes.

“You’ve arrived in a place of peace, tranquility and relaxation.”

Supporting First Nations tourism, sovereignty

The addition of Tsawaak RV Resort & Campground turns the Mackenzie Beach area of Tofino into a Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations campus of sorts.

The onsite gallery will carry local art and Indigenous offerings, while Tin Wis Resort continues to develop Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations tourism experiences, including the return of naaʔuu this fall 2023

Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation launched naaʔuu, an evening of cultural sharing and feasting together, in March 2023. New dates are coming for fall!

The significance of being Tla-o-qui-aht owned means your stay here supports the rise of Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, as the Nation’s Resource Manager Saya Masso explains in this ZenSeekers coverage detailing the vision and opportunity Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation is building.

And that means good things now, and still to come, for visitors and locals alike.
